With perseverance, dedication to her profession, and natural charm that goes well with her bubbly personality, Ma Elena M. Litao became an immensely successful career woman in her field. She could manage nerve-racking jobs and responsibilities while staying on top of her social life. Her cleverness and genuine love for students made her an excellent professor, a friend, and a person who you could depend on through times of difficulties and uncertainties.

She finished her degree at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in year 2005. Although BS Accountancy was not her first choice, she was a consistent Dean’s Lister from 2001 to 2004. She was also a multi-talented student back then. When she was not busy fulfilling her duties and obligations as JPIA VP for Academics (2003-2004) and JPIA EVP-External (2004-2005), she sings, dances, acts, and performs during assemblies and other school-related events. After passing the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Licensure Examination, she worked as an Associate-In-Charge at SGV & Co. from year 2005 to 2007. Following those two years of experience, she was hired as finance manager of Falcon Waterfree Philippines, Inc. from year 2008 to 2009 and became a part-time Faculty staff at Adamson University. She worked as a professor at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and became the adviser of JPIA-PLM afterwards.

There are more to Ma’am Mayel than just being an aggressive and competitive CPA. She has a happy and sweet disposition in life. Her contagious smile and her great sense of humor are few of her best assets. She also has passion for fashion. She wears simple yet captivating outfits that show her impeccable sense of style and timeless beauty.  Her confidence and presentable looks could easily catch everyone’s attention. She gives candid opinions and straight to the point comments not to criticize students but to prepare them to be strong and to teach them how to accept mistakes. She is aware of the possibilities of rejection in the future that they may encounter and she wants them to continue striving towards their goals despite all the hindrances. “At first glance she may look intimidating and snobbish, but as soon as you get to know her you will realize that no other professor can be as kind and selfless as she is,” says Ysabelle Guinto, VP for Communications, JPIA-PLM.

This outstanding professor has a different teaching approach. She relates certain accounting topics to current issues and other relevant events, making every discussion more interesting. She has a way of making subject matters easy to understand. Every class loves the quizzes she makes. They are exciting, challenging, and promote healthy competition among the students. Prizes are also awarded to winning teams. Who would have thought that answering tough questions could be so much fun? The class is over before you even know it. And somehow you want to ask for more.

For you to get to know her better, we asked her a few questions.

The accounting profession offers bigger opportunities in the corporate world or in other arenas, why then did you choose to become a teacher?

I just tried to be one as I was a bit bored and I just want to live a simple life. In academe, I get to be humble and a person of integrity (something that is hard to practice in the corporate world).
More money= more problems.

Define happiness.

Simple.

What is the role of a CPA in nation-building?

CPAs control all the transactions in the private sector and the government. We make the administrators look good or bad. It’s either we stop them (from being a corrupt) or we help them (steal money).

How do you want yourself to be known or remembered as/for?

I want to be known as the person who made a difference (in the accountancy profession).

People say ignorance is bliss. If so, why do you think we still strive to seek knowledge?

I don’t know what others say about it but when I learn something, I feel like I become more beautiful. Haha. Seriously, I feel more confident about myself and I feel the need to share that knowledge to others.

You are most likely with a man who has?

A lot of money. Haha. Joke. I just want someone who respects me and will really take good care of me.

Ma’am Litao is undeniably an inspiration to all accounting students. She depicts a person of integrity and dignity. It is pretty amazing that someone like her, who has experienced the joys of wealth, is still humble. She says that you could never be a CPA if you never really want to be one, reminding her students that they should love what they do, and the only things that they should do are the things that they love. They learned so much from her like choosing brains over beauty, actions over words, truth over promises, reality over perception, analysis over impression, and most of all, substance over form. She’s the beacon of light in their cold, dark, and stressful accounting days. Her words would remain inside their hearts. And no matter where she goes, they know that everything that life throws at her would just be new notches on her belt: newly-found success, great wisdom, and unforgettable experience.

I’m in awe whenever she sings in front of the crowd. It’s as if she owns the stage. She radiates confidence whenever she performs. You can see the passion burning in her eyes when she’s singing or dancing or both. Give her a note, a high note and she can rock it. Well, I’m really a fan of anyone who can sing and dance at the same time, and Jenny Cabanlit Adriatico, our current Vice President for Membership is a one blessed woman in that matter.

We all know the side of her as a performer, now let’s have a look on the other side of her personality.

I asked her to describe herself (Physical, attitude, characteristics, etc)

(haha epal lang to, pambawi)

How do you manage to be a leader and at the same time a student?

Pero as much as possible, dapat magawa lahat kahit paisa-isa lang at wala ring mapabayaan. Kung meron man, mini-make sure ko naman na sobrang minimal lang yung magiging effect nun.

Event(s) that define your leadership

Kasi nga diba, “a good leader is a good follower”. Haha basic.

Achievement(s) as a student

Dami na! Naging JPIAN idol na ko nung first year, most active nung second year, naging part ng JPIA EOs last year as chairman for non-acads, tapos ngayon VP Mem naman. Hahaha

Dreams and Goals in life

Syempre yung madagdagan ng comma at three letters (CPA) yung name ko. Sino bang ayaw nun? And yung matupad yung plano ko after 5 years. (secret na to)

Talents, Hobbies

Talents? Haha madami talaga. Nung LTS nga namin nung third year kame, may EO na nagsulat sa papel ko na first impression niya sakin ay “TALENTED” eh. Take note, FIRST IMPRESSION niya yun ha. Madami naman ako kayang gawin eh. Feeling ko nga bahay ko na yung stage kapag CAE day at JPIA day eh. Total performer kumbaga. (buhat bangko? Magsudoku, minesweeper, kumain, tumulala

The interview may be quite short, but personally, I picture out the different sides of her personality. Her characteristics are a little bit contradicting at times. She’s may be a jolly or a melodramatic person, depending on the mood or aura she feels. And above all, she is who she is. Every person is a unique individual starting from the DNA that is in our every cell. Her traits, experiences, philosophies in life and a lot more depict her individuality.

It was in my freshest days of my college life when I first saw this CAE student whom I thought was a batchmate of mine then. It was that laugh, that hysterical laugh, that made me look curiously and see a "chibi-like", huggable woman on my right side. I merely shrugged off the moment and just said, "mukhang may mga baliw rin pala dito sa CAE".

The floors of GL are too small for people to not be acquainted with each other, making it next to impossible to not to see her again. As months passed by, I saw myself mentally counting my petty observations on her. Unnecessary as it may be, but who will just ignore that cutie-patootie higher year student who has this natural childish aspects on her? Make it two, I forgot to say her simple and not-so-girlish looks, and her curly, forever-ponytailed hair, and the fact that she is a JPIA officer, and... Oh, it's more than two.

So, going back. She was then a part of my "mystery list" until the day before the day before yesterday. She is not on the list anymore and let me tell you five reasons why is that so.

A legit personable character. Addition to the fact that she is always wearing this "chubelita" smile, you can clearly observe (during breaks) that she's also with a set of cray-cray friends. She easily attaches herself with people and of course, she does not want anyone to break her trust. A self-acclaimed "mabait at cute", she truly has this natural person-oriented, happy-go-lucky and friendly personality within her.

The "lazy but responsible" ironic cliche. With her matching HAHAHAHA, she honestly confessed of her being victimized by laziness and easily tempted by bum-around activities. I do not believe in that, though. A responsible person who will work and create personal relationships with her co-officers, is this the definition of her so-called laziness? Let me tell you a trivia. I randomly asked her why did she chose to be a part of JPIA and why not CAE instead and she said, "Mas naging close kasi ako sa past JPIA EO’s kaysa student council officers kaya mas pinili ko sa JPIA." A dedicated person who works for the love of JPIA, indeed.

Humble in gracious and defeat. Accounting is hard, accounting plus an extracurricular is much harder. Besides of being a full-time officer, she still doesn't forget her priorities and her true responsibilities. Truly, a real JPIAN strives just to have the letter combination of "CPA" added in their surnames, right? She maybe does not have superpowers to fly but having the ability to survive sleepless nights? Boom, a real call for a massive hands down!! Despite of her saying to herself that "hindi naman ako matalino, hindi naman ako talented", being a survivor of a BSA's dream destroyer (Compre, for short), a part of the dean's list and even the accounting synergy - 'nuff said.

Study hard, party harder. Despite of her "hair-wrenching" activities, it must not be forgotten that she does not have any plans to be insane. Having a mix of a GG and GC blood, one of her best qualities is that, she still gives time to truly experience the real essence of happiness. Thanks to time management, she can still have time to exchange laughters with her friends or just take a seat in the corner and do her fave hobby: reading. Being inclined with Classical Literature, she is fond of reading novels on Greek Mythology. Sanity at its best, with her lovey-dovey Percy Jackson.

A container of morals. Being an optimistic person, she does not let herself be astray on the obstacles of reality. Simply, she is just an extraordinarily ordinary person, giving the best out of things and just loving life.

"Mahalin mo anuman yang ginagawa mo. Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted.”

In conclusion, I just want to say that from a mysterious acquaintance, she finally became an interesting college-mate of mine. And in conclusion of my conclusion, I would like to dedicate a bajillion of rain claps for Ate Grace Reprado, our Vice-President for Audit!

Forget the boring, nerd stereotype. This vixen brings intelligence, sexy and beauty in one package.

Ms. Ann Jullian Hernandez, Chairman of Finance shares her stocks, achievements and experiences.

SHE’S GOT THE BRAINS

“. . .(N)ung bata ako, lagi ko(ng) sinasabi(ng) gusto ko maging accountant.” Even during her younger years, this girl had big dreams and determination to reach them. Equipped with the knowledge from her high school years, she enrolled in PLM in the BS Accountancy degree. On her 1st year, she showed her prowess in Fundamentals of Accounting 1 & 2 where she got two very promising, shining “uno’s”. That same year, she was awarded as one of the top 10 BSA 1st year students for having a GWA of 1.24. Now on her 3rd year college, she maintains her good grades and is still among the top students of her batch.

When asked what her secret is, “ Hardwork plus prayer lang naman yan. Siguro may hinahabol

Aside from being a student & JPIA officer, she is also a recipient of the Muntinlupa Scholarship Program. “Nag-aaral ako mabuti para sa scholarship . . . para makatulong sa pamilya”

To give her family a better life is what pushes her to strive and work hard for her dreams.” . . . Ginagawa ko lahat yun out of love J . . . Sila ang inspirasyon  ko”

SHES GOT THE BEAUTY

“Ahh. yun ? Haha! Sino ba namang mag-aakala na sasali ako sa ganon! “,exclaims MS. CAE 2012 BSA 2-2 representative. She cannot be described as timid and shy but she is neither one who likes to take center stage. Yet, she decided to accept the challenge. “Iniisip ko nun pinagtitripan ako ng classmates ko. Pero nung andun na, ok naman. . . “ And what did she like most about the experience ? . . “. . . make up at kung anu anong burloloy . Haha! “

SHE”S GOT THE BODY

With so many tasks and responsibilities to juggle, having a sound mind and healthy body is one less thing to worry about. Our lady here is lucky to have both. “ Haha! Mukha ba (a)kong healthy ? ! !

“Her hearty chuckle confirms our observations .“ Basta may sapat na tulog lang. ok na ako." :)

“The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday”. A short yet very meaningful and inspiring adage that this particular person I’m gonna be introducing with, believed for most of her years of living. It is what I personally witnessed that, wherever, whatever and whoever she is TODAY, is certainly a lot much better than she was YESTERDAY.

“Unpredictable”, is probably the exact word to describe her. However, this is also exactly one of the major grounds to know her true, deserving and trustworthy friends that would still find her awesome and fascinating regardless of her random moods most of the time.

Like everyone else, there’s nothing much different about her. She loves reading books, novels in particular, and listening to music. And as what each and every human being dreamt of, she also wanted to travel around the world. Furthermore, she was also confused of what kind of profession she would pursue. Being a teacher, doctor, nurse and even a lawyer someday were perhaps the career that were familiar to her yet, she never saw herself ending up tracking any of those paths. But finally, she made the most difficult decision that would change her fate for the rest of her life – taking up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). It was never been easy to play a college student role, predominantly, to function as an effective and efficient accounting student. It gets more complicated when she chose to commit herself to become a JPIAn leader which according to her has already become part of her life after engaging with it for almost three consecutive years. In spite of her hectic schedule and loads of duties, responsibilities and demands, she still managed to accomplish each and every task given to her as a JPIAn executive officer, student and individual outstandingly. And the secret formula behind this huge success is just knowing her priorities. Moreover, what leads her to the ground she currently standing at, at this very moment, is her family – the people who primarily and basically cause her existence . . . who completely and wholly define MARIELLE RAZON.

So I was walking down the street one day and saw this outstanding girl. She’s totally awesome. I wish I had the chance to know more about her. Unfortunately, I never got to.

BUT, I’ve got something better for you guys today. Today we’ll have Ms. Claudine Chelsea Tan Faylogna. A quick overview of who she is: She’s a Fourth year accounting student at PLM and the Editor-In-Chief of the JPIA-PLM publication, The Ledger. If you haven’t even glanced at a picture of her, she’s mostly stare-eyes and blinding-smiles on tan skin with black hair that falls just below the shoulders. Not too tall, though. Just right.

I asked her: “How would you describe yourself if you were the following?”

Yourself. Claudine is a very transparent, outspoken and loud person at isa rin syang weird at unpredictable na tao, magulong kausap (HAHAHA) pero nasa ayos pa rin naman ang pag-iisip - feeling ko ang isip bata ko kahit 19 na ako (eh I don't look like I'm 19 naman diba so keri lang, LOL). Other than that, isa syang certified bookworm, blogger, pizza lover, matakaw kahit di halata, antukin, at pangarap nyang maging isang CPA-Lawyer (para may positive naman pakinggan hehe), at ayun pala, optimistic sya, hahaha, tipong kahit anong mangyari push lang! Favorite color nya ang pink (pa-girl eh lol) at frustration nya ang pagdo-drawing kasi kahit stick drawing yan, palpak sya, as in. :| (HAHA)

Your accounting professor.

Your fellow officer. Makulit at matulungin (I guess) kasi kahit di nya trabaho, kung kaya nyang gawin, she'll do it and she'll help you.

A writer in the ledger. An understanding EIC (siguro naman diba? hehe). She appreciates every work na sina-submit ng writers nya kasi alam nyang nag-exert ng effort yung mga gumagawa nun. At obviously passion nya talaga ang pagsusulat kasi kung di mo passion yun, di mo pagtatyagaan yung trabaho ng pagiging EIC. :-)

A batchmate. Maingay, madaldal, makulit, mayamutin pero bihirang magalit, mabait pero magulo. Madalas nakatawa pero iyakin. PETIKS, MASAYAHIN, KALOG. :))

A stranger. Masungit, maldita, mataray (first impressions saken palagi) PERO friendly kasi "I" always do the first move to make friends. :D

We may or may not share the same ideas with what is on up there but I’m sure we’d agree to it eventually. Because what else would Ate Clau be if she wasn’t the outspoken, hard-working, appreciative, emotional and very [un]approachable person? On top of that, she has not mentioned her numerous talents. That is a sign of humility. If you look at everything really intently (or even upon first meeting!), you’d know for sure why we have this girl, this leader, as our Editor-in-Chief - An inspiration in a convenient little package.

Brown – colored skin, high stature, attractive smile, handsome looks, charming personality, remarkably smart – characteristics that if one has will surely be astounding and will leave your mouth hanging. Fortunately, a guy bearing the name ADRIAN KASILAG JIMENEZ, AJ for short, possesses these characteristics. JPIA-PLM is blessed to have this 18 year old asset who is very responsible and very passionate in his works and in everything he does. Now, who wouldn’t want to get to know him more?

In JPIA, he was appointed as the Chairman for Arts and Design in which he freely accepted the position. He owns incredible hands and creative mind to produce masterpieces. Outside JPIA, he is not only a responsible person, but also a kind individual and is devoted to God. He is a volunteer for the Campus Ministry in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). He is also a volunteer altar server for seven years in their church – Sto. Niño de Tondo, located in Tondo, Manila.

Seeing Adrian at first will make you think of him as a scary person because of his height and silence, that he is a shy and always quiet. Lastly, you may assume that he is a snobbish person and approaching him would be a very big mistake. Nevertheless, remember that first impressions never last. If it happens to be, you will fail to notice who the person really is. As a matter of fact, he is not scary, neither quiet nor a snob. When you happen to get the chance to talk to him, you will say that he is kind and approachable. He is also somewhat talkative. He has lots of stories to tell you and advices that may help you. In short, he is a good person and not that scary.

He is now a third year student, and one more year here in PLM, he will graduate and prepare for the CPA Board Exam. He dreams to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He really works hard and tries his best to get good grades and graduate. But, every human being doesn’t want to stick to only one ambition. In the near future, we may change our mind and reach for the others. Aside from reaching the dream to be a CPA, he also wanted to be a real estate broker. He also wishes to have a simple and happy life – a life that doesn’t have many complications and limits.

We all know that being a college student is very stressful, nerve-wracking and will really make you busy. There are lots of activities, assignments, requirements, sleepless nights, growing eye bags, etc.  Regardless of all of these problems, another thing that will make you admire Adrian is his effective management of time. In spite of the many activities he takes part in, he can handle them all. He uses his time very wisely and even deals with different tasks attentively. He still has time for his friends and family.

Each individual has their own glorious highs and terrible lows, satisfactions and frustrations. These events would help an individual become a better person. Others may take their frustration very seriously, but as for Adrian, it seems like it is just a normal experience. Well, it’s kind of understandable why he thinks it’s just normal. It is because his frustration in life is that he doesn’t have a second name which would make him different to his siblings.

Adrian is a capable leader, a leader that is passionate to his works, responsible to his acts, and a kind son and friend. There are still many things he can contribute for the benefits of our nation. Furthermore, there are still many things to know about him. For example, he is now into pop arts and he can sing too. He would be a talent that JPIA can be proud of. Try getting to know him more. Surely, he would be pleased. At the same time, you will come to appreciate him.

Our friendly JPIA Vice President for Non-Academics, Ervin Carl E. Rodriguez, has gladly given us bits and pieces in this interview about himself and his affiliation with JPIA. Read on to see what he has to say about things like his achievements, inspirations, and personal frustrations.

Our EO from Tondo, Manila, Ervin, a.k.a Echer, has formerly served as the JPIA Chairman – Non Academics and Vice President – Membership. He was first appointed by Rap Mangalindan when he was a sophomore.

When asked about his achievements as a college student, this is what he has to say: Sa Acads wala eh. Ha-ha. Nung first year, Most Active JPIAN (first year) ako.

Kuya Echer also says that he has joined many inter-school competitions, especially Non-Academic. “Pero sa acads isa pa lng. Yung Executive Officers’ Cup, 5th place kami out of 25. Kaso last year kasi 1st sila so hindi namin na-retain yung title. Malungkot tuloy,” he adds.

The next question asked is ‘What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now? Do you plan to pursue a career in politics?’ to which he responds “CPA na ko nun na nagwo-work sa isang Auditing Firm.  Ayaw ko sa politics magulo dun.

Describe yourself. What do you like and dislike about a person? about yourself?

Kuya Echer, ever so honest, replied “Sa tao wala ata. Yung mayabang siguro.”

‘Live your life to the fullest’ is his motto, he says. As to his principle in leadership, he says, “Maging responsible.”

Now, when asked the question ‘What spurs you on to move forward? Any drives? Inspirations?’ (Uh, inspiration. I stand corrected, Kuya Echer.), he gives this somewhat evasive answer: Inspirations?

Yeah. Go figure.

Next question: Do you have any personal frustrations? How do you cope with it? Any advice to people with the same problem?

Maging magaling na singer. Kumakanta na lang ako sa CR. Ha-ha-ha! And true, nothing like a karaoke to help frustrated singers.

As for the question ‘You are well-qualified to run for a position in JPIA-NCR. Why did you choose to run for the local chapter instead?’, he gives us this answer: Masyado na kasing busy sa school and mukhang di ko kakayanin yung time requirement kapag officer ka ng NCR.

Hey, at least we have Kuya Echer all for ourselves, don’t we?

When asked what he thinks of this year’s set of federation officers, he says, “Sana. Kaya namin to. Kami pa. Stay positive lang.”

As for his message for us JPIANs, this is what he has to say:

Sana nag-e-enjoy kayo sa mga events naminMinsan lang tayo maging College Student kaya explore other things in life while studying. Godbless JPIANs and future CPAs!”
