THE ISLAND DREAMER
by Diana Cajes, BSA 4-2

Everybody has a dream. A dream that we want to pursue and we must try to live on. A dream, it may be big or small, can be a reason for a person to live his/her life doing whatever it takes to reach and take that dream. As we know, there is no such thing as free lunch but for all of us who are still dreaming, we must remember that there are only three things that we can always do freely in this world and that is breathing, believing and dreaming. And for this person, he takes his dreaming to a higher level. This person is no other than our Vice- President for Academics, Shawn Michael Miñoza.

Our dreams as children are really bizarre and maybe a little impossible to reach. But for Shawn, he takes his childhood dreams seriously and that is to be a lawyer and have his own island. This dream all started way back when he’s in sixth grade. Because during that time, he met a person who has an island and this person happens to be a lawyer. So Shawn being inspired by that person lives out his life doing his best reaching that dream and treating this also as his goal in life. That’s why he took up accounting as a pre-law course. In fact, at a very early age, he started to save money to buy an island and take note the sum was getting bigger each passing year. (Ahemm! 6 digits, I hope I can announce it publicly. Hehe.) When asked why he dreams of having an island besides his childhood reasons, he said that someday that island will be his solace. It is a place where he can no more worry about the problems of the world and a place where he can find peace and comfort.

From living out his childhood dream to his hobbies and interests, our VP for ACADS here sure has a heart of a child. He is an anime lover who loves to watch anime and reads manga. In fact, he named his first pet turtle, Raffy from TMNT’s Raphael. Shawn, being an anime lover has also to do with his view towards friendship. And it shows through his favorite anime, One Piece, which highlights loyalty and camaraderie among friends. His Passion for reading books especially under the young adults’ genre (But not the romantic ones. Makati daw kasi, PBB Teens!) also proves his being child at heart because his all time favorite book series are the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the Heroes of Olympus. Shawn’s hobbies and interests serve as a window for us to know who he really is; a person though being childish sometimes knows that he wants to have loyal friends that are not going to leave him hanging.

All of us have our ups and downs in our life; achievements and downfall moments that make us stronger as a person. And for Shawn, one of his greatest achievement as of now is being the VP for Academics. Although his reason for running in that position is not that dramatic, he is still happy to be able to expose his leadership skills proving that he can still be an active student without showcasing real talents because he said that he has none. (But there’s this time that he repeatedly sings a line from Maroon 5’s Payphone. XD.) But being just a man, he had also downfall moments in his life. He might not want to mention what are these but we know these moments left a mark in his heart and these moments will surely make his life challenging and exciting.

As a student, we can say that he has the skills in the academics department. As a leader, he has this year to prove to us his leadership skills. As a typical teenager, he has his friends and peers, he laughs and he hangs out. And as a person, he also has his critics. It only proves that sometimes no matter how good you are doing in the other aspects of your life, there is always someone who will recognize your flaws and will help you to know your true self. His critics might say that he can be annoying and egoistic sometimes. But when he is asked how he feels toward negative opinions from others, he just shrugs and says that he feels indifferent and he doesn’t care about what other people might say about him.  He is just happy living in his own ways and doing his best to reach his dreams.

No man is an island. Nobody can ever be successful without the help and support of others, may it be your critics, your friends and most importantly your family. Having flaws, mistake and downfalls doesn’t mean that we lose or fail; it only shows that we are humans, we are not perfect and therefore we can get up, move on and continue living our hopes and dreams. Shawn may be living in his own way now but somewhere along his journey, there can be someone that will make him realize that sometimes our known and trusted ways are not always the best for us. We must learn to consider opinions and change for the better. Let me share our VP for ACADS’ motto, “Embrace your dreams, and no matter what happens protect your honor.” To Shawn and to all of us, Dream Big and Live Out Our Dreams!

P.U.S.H.!!!  (He always says this.)

HER LOUD SILENCE
by Nica Quintana, BSA 4-2

To most people, our Chairman for Education & Research, Miss Kristel De Castro Abaday is a person who is kind, family-oriented and humble.

Let us further get to know her.
Here is an interview of Miss Kristel De Castro Abaday.

Full Name: Kristel De Castro Abaday

Nickname: Stel, Tel

What are your achievements as a college student?

What are your achievements as an active JPIAN?

Have you joined inter-school competitions? Yup, ngayong 4th year lang. NCR- CUP.

What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?

Describe yourself. What do you like and dislike about a person? About yourself?

What is your life’s motto? What are your principles in leadership? Alam mo yan Nica, try and try until you succeed. Gasgas man yan, pero malaking tulong talaga yan.

What do you do outside JPIA? What are your other affiliations? Wala.

What are your plans for JPIA?

Any message for the JPIANs of PLM? Tandaan nio lang try and try until you succeed at magdasal lang, it works.

Our Chairman for Education & Research is a gentle and thoughtful person. She is hardworking and modest. This is proven by her academic position. Her actions depicts a person who does not think of oneself as above others even though she has lots of outstanding qualities. Her hair was a rich shade of ebony. It simply flowed freely down her back to adorn her glowing soft cashew-like skin. Her eyes were sparkling and clever, as black as ink and seemed to brighten the world. A simple delicate nose, high cheekbones, curve full lips- she seemed the picture of simplicity. She got that epic sexy-back complemented by her tall height. She is a typical kolehiyala, a Filipina- though she laughs uncontrollably. A Caviteña at mind and a Manileña at heart. I am referring to no other than our JPIAn Secretary- Miss Michelle Joy Lopez.

Now let us now take a multi-zoom snapshot to our Secretary through this one-on-one interview about herself, love-life, and her career as our Secretary.

Describe Joy in 3 words, then why? Sobrang ganda ko. Given na, yun na yun. :D

What is unique about you? Namamapak ako ng milo.

What are your hidden talents? I can sing, I can dance, and I can act- everything. :)))

Who is Joy outside the school? Ganun padin, walang pinagbago, masayahin.

What are your frustrations in life? Wala, sobrang galling ko kasing kumanta at sumayaw. Frustrations - accounting.

What accounting principle do you believe in? Going concern, kasi life goes on. Continuous yung cycle ng buhay.

What is love? Love is like accounting. There is always an assumption.

Have you fell in love? Anu ba yan, oo.

Does it mean that you already had relationship in the past? Oo, unfortunately.

Do you have a boyfriend right now? Wala.

What is your boyfriend material? :]]

What is the role of the JPIAn secretary?

How are you nominated in that position? Yung executive secretary kasi di sya binoboto. Yung pagkuha sa posisyon e through appointment. Which is yung president yung namimili.

Why did you join the officers? E kasi alam kong makakatulong sa akin ito hindi lang ngayong nag-aaral pa ako kundi in the future din.

In what ways can this certain position help you? Madami kang makikilala lalo na sa mga higher years tapos pwede kang magtanong kung me problema ka sa accounting. Mas magiging malaki pa yung world mo. Di lang yung naka isolate ka.

Are you happy as an officer? Oo syempre naman.

What is your target position next year? As of now wala pa, ang nasa isip ko kasi ngayon yung present na ginagawa ko. Sine-set aside ko muna yung future.

What can you say to the aspiring officers? Mag join sila as officer kase masaya at sa JPIA mag- go- grow ka hindi lang as a student kundi as a person.

Our Executive Secretary is a great conversationalist, uplifting. An officer who is confident but not stuck up. Nice, friendly, respectful. A woman who is mature and can hold an intelligent conversation. A positive woman, a woman who takes her steps one at a time. A woman who talks a lot, but then remains silent. A woman who can focus on you when you are talking to her, an active listener. A sexy lady.

A songstress in the form of a leader. A leader in the form of a student. And a student in the form of a friend. The Executive Vice President of JPIA is known as a cameo – various colors contained in one.

A friend:

Cherry Mae Arma has not only a pleasing personality but also an attractive one. One will always be the first to approach her, not because she's shy enough to hide in her shell, but hearing her talk will draw you to build a sturdy friendship with her. According to her friends, her kindness and humility is what they like the most. "Bias as to her friends," a friend of her said. She'll assure you that you won't be left out. And it's one of the reasons why you would want to be friends with her.

A student:

Cherry's excellence in her studies is complemented by her active lifestyle. Her passion in academics is the same as the passion that burns for the non-academics. She joined JPIAn idol, a singing contest, and made it to the third round. She also participated PLM idol, also a singing contest wherein she and her partner, John Alfred Danao (BSA 4-2), competed against different colleges. They made it to the finals and placed 5th. Now as the current EVP, she's embedded with different activities she truly enjoys.

A leader:

During her first year in college, she was elected as the class president of BSA 1-3. They never doubted their president and through faith, their block became more solid than ever. At the end of the second year, she decided to run as the EVP and her friends supported her wholly. Recently she applied for Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC). The organization aims for the development of leaders by sharing them with values.

A human being:

Cherry has also the characteristics that define her from others. She loves to sing and aspires to be a singer one day. A proven avid fan of Jessica Sanchez for she really made it a point that she’d be able to watch American Idol's concert. She's also an enthusiast of fun runs, marathons and such. Offer her some fries and surely she'll love you already.

There's just too much to know, describe, and learn about her. It'll be easier to befriend her for she is as entertaining as she appears to be.

Nowadays, our country is beneath the shadows of disastrous problems, be it social, economic or moral. What our nation needs is a light of hope – a conscientious student, a diplomatic leader, an exceptional person – John Michael Montoya or commonly nicknamed as Mikee.

John Michael was born on the 14th of December 1992 in Batangas City. Growing up as the eldest of the two children of Joselito and Edna, he was indoctrinated with early leadership skills.

In 2009, he took up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, one of the top performing universities in the country. His passion for leadership materialized through the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants or JPIA when he was then a member. He is the current president of the organization’s PLM chapter.

For Mikee, achieving presidency in JPIA was like passing through a needle’s eye. With his cheerful personality and relaxed way of handling difficulties, who would think that his JPIA journey has undergone numerous problems and obstacles?

In his first attempt of taking up a higher position in JPIA when he ran for auditor in the 2010 elections, he got lost; however, he did not take it as a failure, but a challenge instead. He was urged to work and strive harder as a JPIAn and this was clearly noticed by the then president Rojaen Gapa. For that, he was appointed as the executive secretary and asserted a brilliant job. In the following year, he became the executive vice president and president on March 2012. As the saying goes, “There is no such thing as defeat, but rather a delayed success.”

Mikee’s diplomacy is probably the ground reason why he captured the hearts of the JPIAns, which he considered as his greatest inspiration. He assures that as much as possible, the sentiments of the majority would be the basis of his decisions. According to him, conflicts would do no good in the organization and would rather be roots for the arising of new problems. Because of his love for the JPIAns of PLM, he rejected his ambition of running in the NCR Council fearing that he might neglect his obligations in his local chapter. Likewise, he tries his very best to maintain the harmonious relationship among his executive officers for them to perform their duties lightly and smoothly.

Despite his busy schedule in JPIA, Mikee still manages to focus and excel in his academics especially in Accounting, his craft. In fact, he became one of the ten finalists of the Search for PLM Accounting Titan (SPAT) in December 2009.

Michael Montoya is indeed an asset of JPIA. The exemplifying values and competence he showed in his tenure in the organization serves to prove that he is undeniably one of the lights of hope that will brighten the days of the dark cavalries covering the nation.

A consistent Top 1 Dean’s Lister. An all-time champion in many quiz bees and interschool competitions. A master of 8 board subjects. A recipient of prestigious awards, inside and outside the university. Who would have ever thought that from a “humihinga lang” type of person in the classroom, 21-year old Marc Rodolf Arca has seemed to achieve a lot at this early age?

Proving himself that he has not just gotten the brains but also the capabilities of serving his fellow JPIAns, he was elected as VP Academics of JPIA-PLM for the federation year 2011-2012, and he had done well in handling the position entrusted to him.

He recently graduated with flying colors making a history as the first Summa Cum Laude of College of Accountancy and Economics (CAE).

Not only giving pride to CAE, he also had given Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila an honor as he became an awardee of the Most Outstanding JPIAn  in the National Federation Junior Philippines Institute of Accountants – NCR.  And it didn’t stop there because recently, he brought home the highest recognition that only few chosen JPIAns can have, the Most Outstanding JPIAn in NFJPIA in the National Level.

Because of his achievements, he was once featured in Manila Bulletin, again, bringing pride to PLM.

Arca, offering all of his achievements to his parents, family, friends, classmates, batchmates and to God, left an inspiration to everyone that we can also be achievers like him.

Arca seems to hold the same philosophy in reaching dreams when he said to his fellow JPIAns that they should dare to dream and never give up on them, because best things happen to those who believe – just like what he has done, and is still continue doing.

Indeed, Marc Arca is a real JPIA pride!
