Takers of the CPA Licensure Examination this coming October were overwhelmed with support and prayers as JPIA-PLM, headed by VP Audit, Grace Reprado conducted a board mass last September 21, 2012, 10-11AM at the PLM Chapel. The event felt even holier because fatefully, it's also the Feast Day of St. Matthew, patron of tax collectors, accountants and customs officers.

The mass was held by Fr. Amer, a resident priest in the Campus Ministry. Claudine Faylogna (JPIA-PLM Editor-in-Chief) was the commentator. The First Reading was led by Jeff Corea (4th yr). Precedent is the Responsorial Psalm read by Matt San Juan (3rd yr), and Prayers of the Faithful by Cherry Arma (JPIA-PLM Executive Vice President).

Afterwards, a food treat was enjoyed. Then, small gifts were also given to the board takers as a token of “blessing”. They also brought with them the hopes of everybody- hopes that they'd all bring pride and success.

As closing remarks, Dean Honorata Pagaduan left a few words as an inspirational message, and so did Prof. Dennis Tan, Prof. Nonalyn Gesalan, Prof. Josephine Yopo, Prof. Lydia Sabater and JPIA-PLM Adviser Prof. Mayel Litao who each have their own untamed wisdom to impart.

The relentless battle between the Romans and the gallant Greeks has not yet come to its end. The continuation of “Theomacia: Clash of the Demi-gods” was held on the 3rd of September 2012 at Gusaling Atienza Room 201. Contestants had to fight and win for their teams namely, “Arcadians” and “Animals”, from mind-boggling subjects such as Business Law, Taxation, and Auditing Theory.

Maryjane Dellosa (BSA 4-1 TEAM: ANIMALS), crowned daughter of Minerva won in the Business Law category. Mary Ann Gazzingan (BSA 4-2 TEAM: ARCADIANS) bragged the second place while Mary Grace Alivio (BSA 4-1 TEAM: ANIMALS) landed on the third spot.

For Taxation, the son of Apollo, Jun King Cepe (BSA 4-2 TEAM: ARCADIANS), was hailed winner of said category. He was followed by Rose Ann Cabisosa (BSA 4-1 TEAM: ANIMALS) and Hana Faller (BSA 4-2 TEAM: ARCADIANS) as 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.

But in the last category, the odds weren’t in Arcadians’ favor as the Animals dominated the final part of this event. Heroine of Vesta also known as Nur Aminah Andig turned out to be the champion with her blockmates Heindrich Putosa and Danica Flores who placed 2nd and 3rd in the competition.

A lot more is yet to be unleashed as the two remaining battles (Auditing Problems and Practical Accounting II) and the Theomacia Battles for the lower years will commence by the second semester of this school year. Which team are you on?

Despite the fact that the organization hasn’t conducted yet its first General Assembly due to weather and schedule interferences, enjoyment, excitement, and intense nervousness were felt by the students during their participation in the Theomacia Battles 1 – 3 and Extreme Overload 2012 held last August 24 and 29 in Gusaling Atienza 201.

The Academics Department hosted the annual Theomacia Battle with the theme “Clash of the Demi-gods” to assess students’ knowledge regarding the eight accounting board subjects (Practical Accounting 1-2, Theory of Accounts, Management Services, Auditing Theory and Problem, Taxation, and Business Law).

On August 24, the Alfred Danao of Team Arcadian was hailed as Hunter of Artemis in Practical Accounting I for placing 1st. Teammates Jun King Cepe and Mary Ann Gazzingan on 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

On August 29, Arcadian damsel Zarah Verona prevailed as the Daughter of Aphrodite, leaving Rose Ann Cabisora on the 2nd spot and Erly Estanislao on the 3rd, both from Team Animals, in their battle entitled Theory of Accounts last August 29, 2012.

There came a turn in tide when Animals, with their methodology and techniques, won in the battle concerning Management Advisory Services. Franz Parohinog was hailed to be the Son of Vulcan, followed by teammate Rommel Quintos and then Martin Heje of the Arcadian.

On the other hand, Non – academics and Communications Departments’ joint program, Extreme Overload 2012, was also held last August 29 after the Theomacia battles, testing the general knowledge of fellow JPIANs.

The said contest was divided into three sets. Round 1 was a quiz bee type named “Give up or Give in.” Teams that incurred three consecutive wrong answers needed to face the consequence (drink half-glass vinegar or soy sauce or a raw egg or eat a clove of garlic or a portion of long chili) or be eliminated from the game. There were 30 questions provided. Top 8 pairs with the highest score advanced to the next round.

The “Word War” continues the contest – charade style. In this game participants acted the words in the list that needed to be guessed by the other. Two minutes is given to each pair. 20 random words were in the list including Justin Bieber and make-up. Top 5 pairs with the highest number of words guessed advanced to the final round.

“Buzz a Rhyme” served as the last round. In this game, participants need to supply what is being asked by the question; it maybe the song title, the artist/singer or the lyrics of the next line. The last 5 five pairs were each given a buzzer.

Arcadians ended the Extreme Overload 2012 with a bang when pair Edwin John Mante and Carriza Javier was declared champions. Animals settled for 2nd and 3rd place with Karl Bennett Ibe - Raymond Gutierrez pair and Danica Flores - LJ Vargas team, respectively.

JPIANs, through these competitions, only proved that they kept the fire burning blue no matter what.

It is the Year of the Dragons in the Chinese calendar; the lucky year of the College of Accountancy and Economics Green Dragons. It was never just pure luck. The CAE students defines dragon-ly competition by showing works that  exemplify it through pure talent crossed with irrevocable and genuine determination, importance of academic excellence and brilliance, and, of course, beautiful faces. Truly, the CAE students are not just beauty and brains but rather beauty, brains and talents!

The annual College of Accountancy and Economics General Assembly was held on the 6th of July year 2012 as a form of celebration to express the gratitude not just for winning but also for all those banging cheers during the events, all the efforts paid and all the determination released from the dragon inside all of us.

Early 8 o’clock and the fog of competition can be felt among all of us just by hearing the three teams “battle cries” or their cheers. This is because of the first part of the General Assembly: the Team Building. The teams were Charotera (Turtles) of Arianne Enriquez (BSBE 4-1) Enriquez, Asyumera (Elephants) of Raymond Carl Choco (BSA 4-1) and Echusera (Nightingales) of Kim Albao (BSA 4-2) – in which their team names stand for CAE @ TEN — the council’s purpose for these names is to remove the seriousness of rivalry and invoke the practice of friendly competition and having F.U.N. It was the team leaders’ fate to lead and the proof was clearly shown in their surnames—an acronym for CAE (Choco, Albao and Enriquez) which was noticed by the CAE-SC.

The team building portion was sets of games—which was unordinary and somehow, unique—and was held on the field. It started with a game that promoted coordination among the teams. Its mechanics is just creating a straight line following the order said by the facilitators such as height (smallest to tallest), alphabetical arrangement of surnames and orderly sequence of birth months or birth days. Other equally difficult games were Water and Balloon Rellay and Form-a-Shape.

The second and most awaited part was the team presentation with random bits of Ms. Gay CAE contests. Speaking of which, the Ms. Gay CAE drowned the serious aura of the team competitions with laughter roaring inside the whole Justo Alberto Auditorium. Each block has their respective representatives. First, they rampaged the stage in their male attire as if it was a Mr. Pogi contest, exactly the type that all you can hear in the background was girl screams. Whether it was just support or the contestants were too handsome to look, I cannot tell. Possibly both. The girl screams were removed and replaced with laughter when the models—er, the contestants “catwalked” the stage individually with high heels and surprising female attire and cracked quotes that was answered with laughs. Most of them can be mistaken as true girls; the artists were talented with the power of makeup. The elimination process surprised everyone, watchers and contestants alike, though. The facilitators used “God’s will” in their decisions in the form of draw lots. It was, in no doubt, an entertaining contest and an effective medicine in removing the tensions of the teams. The remaining contestants showed “unique” talents using random materials such as flags, calculators, worksheets etc. It was the time for the “true” competition. Another elimination happened and so on and so forth… Lastly the three contestants undergone a unique question and answer portion—Pinoy Henyo style. They have to guess the word Gusaling Lacson, followed by a true question and answer portion with professors asking significant questions.

Mixed with the Ms. Gay CAE contest was the awaited team performances. The first to perform was the team Charotera Elephants. They adapted the theme with the inspiring comedy-drama Bollywood movie Three Idiots and spoofed the original Pinoy comedy KimmyDora. The actors and actresses did remarkably in spoofing as if they were the real actors and actresses from the movie.

Team Echusera Nightingale attempted a spectacular cross between horror and romance with the movies, (The Grudge) and No Other Woman. Darkness enveloped the auditorium followed by the strange touch of coldness. Their execution went successfully and somehow it turned out to be comedy. The shadow mime depicting the scenes from No Other Woman was remembered among the audience especially the romantic parts.

Fairy Tales were made a reality by the team Asyumera Elephants. Every eye was on the stage while the team was performing a shadow mime of Cinderella’s life. It sent Goosebumps of unusual amazement to the audience as if they were watching a professional theatrical play. The song from the movie Tangled sparked smiles. They were a natural at “kilig factor”. It made the audience temporarily forget reality and made them believed of the words “Happily Ever After.”

Pure talent stormed the auditorium. Every team deserved the first place. It showcased that CAE students are not just for academics but can compete with world-class talents as well.

Yet only one shall prevail. (It sounded like war ^^). The judges must have great difficulty in their decisions. The winner was the team Asyumera gaining a perfect ten followed by team Echusera, and then Charotera. These are just places but there is no doubt that everyone is a winner.

To complete the event was the Socialization Night. The CAE students gathered to eat with Hogwarts-like style table. The team Asyumera, as their price for winning, won a cake. But everyone was happy as they eat with their teammates like the competition was erased and replaced with joy—not just because of the food but because they are proud to be students in the elite and prestigious College of Accountancy and Economics.

Competitions were held to better improve all the aspects of our studentship; but all the evidences witnessed by their eyes are proofs that it’s more fun in CAE. Let us all awaken the Dragons within us.

A seminar organized by Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants- Eastern Metro Manila Chapter was attended by the fourth year PLM Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants last July 18, 2012 at Miriam College, Quezon City. In fact, JPIA-PLM was one of the chapters who had the biggest number of attendees.

The said event was divided into two parts. The first part was the students’ forum about the International Financial Reporting Standards, tax updates, career opportunities, and stock market, and in a separate room, the elimination round for the Mada-tax-car Quiz bee. The second part was the continuation of the seminar and the final round for the quiz bee.

Dean Ma. Conception Lupisan, a well- known author of advanced accounting books welcomed the delegates from the different schools. It was followed by the opening remarks given by Mr. Francis Ricamora, tax senior director in SGV, a former tax professor in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and now the president of PICPA EMMC.

The speakers who are undeniably experts in various fields of accounting enlightened the minds of the students in different aspects: Mr. Albert Uy mentioned the sectors that may offer a CPA different workload experiences, Ms. Jocelyn De Chaves gave the updates for IFRS and Mr. Hentje Leo Leaño for tax updates. For the career talk, they invited CPAs who represented each one of the four sectors: Mr. Joseph Ian Canlas for the public sector, Atty. Nelson Aspe for the government sector, Atty. Beatriz Salvador for commerce and industry, and Mr. Gavin Lee for educational sector. These professionals encouraged the students who will soon acquire the title ‘CPA’ to at least try to practice in the sector they belong. They also gave advices that should not be forgotten such as: “in practice, live in the principle honor over excellence”; “after becoming a CPA, study law and be a lawyer”; and “establish your connections through joining different accounting organizations”.

During the late afternoon, the top eight students in the elimination round were called. A delegate from PLM, Ms. Hana Faller, received one thousand pesos for being the top scorer in their written exam where eighty three contestants from forty- four schools participated.

The final round was indeed a challenge for the eight participants as they faced difficult tax problems, true or false questions and terms to be identified. After this single elimination and seeding system battle, cash and other prizes in kind were given to winners namely: Mr. Jon Ryan Reyes of New Era University as the Champion, Mr. Jake Telan of University of the East as the 1st runner up, Ms. Rachel Merez of Araullo University as the 2ND runner up, Ms. Regina Joy Basa of Gordon College as the 3rd runner up. The finalists who are Ms. Hana Faller of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Mr. Jakke Posadas of Araullo University, Mr. Neil Kim Bautista of Technological Institute of the Philippines, and Mr. Jeremiah Madlangsakay of national College of Science and Technology were also awarded.

Other prizes were distributed to raffle winners and students who participated in the forum. A lot of JPIA-PLM seniors were actually lucky enough to earn prizes from the raffle. The JPIA-PLM president, Mr. Michael Montoya, brought home the grand prize, a mobile phone from MyPhone.

“Go… CAE! Fight… CAE!”

This was the shout coming from the rejoicing students of the College of Accountancy and Economics (CAE) after bagging most of the championship titles in the recently concluded celebration of PLM’s 47th Founding Anniversary held at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila from June 18-20.

The Dragons grabbed the championships in the major competitions such as Sportsfest, Iskotime, Beat Blast, Isko vs 100 and Extemporaneous Speaking making it the team with the most number of championship titles against its closest rivals.

Aside from that, the Cleopatra beauty of Beverly Maquinana (BSBE 4-1) made the Dragons to win the crown of Bb. Pamantasan and the Adonis physique of JPIAn’s very own Chester Alanes (BSA 4-1) entitled him 1st Runner-up G. Pamantasan.

JPIAns really made a blast in representing CAE in different competitions. The college’s finest fashionistas, Danix de Leon (BSA 4-1) and Alfred Danao (BSA 4-2), landed on the 2nd and 4th spot respectively in PLM Fashionista. Danao, together with Cherry Arma (BSA 3-2) swept the 4th Runner-up award in the duet edition of PLM Idol.

Moreover, the start of the three-day founding anniversary celebration was marked by the float parade wherein CAE’s Shrek-inspired theme float was hailed as the Best Float.

Consequently, the crowd clustered in the University Activity Center (UAC) as Someday Dream stepped on the concert stage singing their popular hit “Hey Daydreamer” and Pilipinas Got Talent grand finalist Happy Feet performing their signature “Tap Dance”.

PLM’s celebration for its 47th year of existence was indeed a success.

The annually celebrated founding anniversary was organized by the Supreme Student Council with the help of the different College Student Councils and was participated by the deans, faculty, staff and students of the university.

Leadership doesn't only mean being able to lead the whole organization. It also means being able to represent the whole organization in the big world - that was what the Executive Officers (EOs) of this federation year did from May 14-18, 2012, just after their LTS.

The EOs presented the planned activities for the coming federation year among the different accounting firms in Makati, namely Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. (Ernst & Young), Punongbayan & Araullo (Grant Thornton International Ltd.), Isla Lipana & Co. (Pricewaterhouse Coopers), Manabat, San Agustin & Co. (KPMG) and Manabat, Delgado, Amper & Co. (Deloitte). This activity is yearly done by the EOs to spot for possible sponsors for the activities to be possible to take place.

Also, it was another week of bonding moments of the JPIA-PLM EOs family.
